Hardware Requirements |
SULinux is based upon RedHat Linux. In fact, SULinux supports
exactly the same hardware as the corresponding RedHat
distribution.
- SULinux 1.0 = RedHat 6.0
- SULinux 1.1 = RedHat 6.1
- SULinux 1.2 = RedHat 6.2
- SULinux 2.0 = RedHat 7.0
- SULinux 7.1 = RedHat 7.1
Please see RedHat's hardware compatability page at http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/

Pre-installation |
- First, consult the Bugs section for any issues
or errata for the SULinux version you are about to install.
- I also recommend looking at this page covering well known Redhat 7.1 gotchas.
- Partition your hard drive. If you are using a FAT filesystem
(such as in Windows 95/98), you can use fips
to partition your system.
PLEASE READ THE DOCUMENTATION
FOR FIPS BEFORE USING IT. FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND FIPS MAY
CORRUPT YOUR ENTIRE HARD DISK!
- Download the boot disk. Laptops may also need pcmcia.img for pcmcia support, with SULinux 7.1 and later also requiring a pcmciadd.img disk for additional driver support.
- For windows: Use rawrite.exe to put the image file (from above) onto a floppy.
For Linux: Run dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0 to copy the
boot image onto a floppy.
- Put the floppy in drive A: and boot. You may have to
reconfigure your BIOS to try to boot off floppy before hard disk.

Installation |
- Select proper language settings.
- Enter in your IP address, netmask, gateway, and name servers.
Normally you should use:
- Netmask = 255.255.0.0
- Primary Nameserver = 171.64.7.77
- Secondary Nameserver = 171.64.5.55
- Choose to install off a FTP Server
- When prompted, enter:
- FTP Site Name: sulinux.stanford.edu
- RedHat Directory: /pub/sulinux/i386
Note: If you wish to use a different version of SULinux
than the latest stable, use the directory:
/pub/sulinux-(version)/i386
Use the translation table of Redhat->SULinux above to find out
what {version} should
be.

Post
Installation |
Upon reboot, the sulinux initialization program will run which
will finish configuring your system.
Note: If you wish to allow people to log into your system
remotely using kerberos, you must install a srvtab. To install a
srvtab, follow the instructions in /etc/leland/README.
Further, you should still regularly apply updates to your system
to ensure continued security.

Further Help |
- Official
RedHat Installation Manual - This is the official Redhat
installation manual. By following it you can also install
SULinux. Note that the FTP site from which you will retrieve the Linux
distribution is "sulinux.stanford.edu" and the directory is
"/pub/sulinux/i386".
- Generic
installation instructions - These instructions contain a
general overview of the process (not the specifics) of
installing *any* Linux system, regardless of the
distribution.
